Yes, 5-character Roblox usernames that nobody has taken still exist in 2026, but not the kind most people hope for. On 1 October 2026 we checked 14,536 five-character names against Roblox's official API. Every letters-only pattern came back empty: 0 free out of 5,000 random letter strings, 1,500 pronounceable names and 1,500 dictionary words. Readable word-plus-number names like a 4-letter word with a digit were gone too, 0 of 1,000. What is still open is the mixed end of the namespace: 43% of random letter-and-digit names and 30% of names with an underscore could be registered, which works out to roughly 21 million and 1.5 million free names. A free 5-character name exists. A free 5-letter word does not.
"5 letter Roblox usernames not taken" is one of the most searched questions about Roblox names, and most answers are lists of names that were taken long before anyone read them. So we measured instead. After our census of every 4-letter Roblox name found none left, the obvious next question was how much room is left one character up.
The result by pattern
We built 5-character names across every pattern a person might try, drew a random sample of each, and checked every name against Roblox. Here is how each pattern came back.
Examples like a7k2q above show the shape of a pattern; they are not names we found free. We do not publish the free names from the study. Any list of available Roblox names is stale within hours, and copying one is the least reliable way to get a name. The method below finds you a fresh one in minutes.
Letters-only 5-letter names are effectively gone
A random sample that finds zero cannot prove that zero are left, but it puts a hard ceiling on how many could be. With 0 free in 5,000 random letter-only names, at 95% confidence no more than about 0.08% of the 11.9 million possible letters-only names are free, about 9,000 at the very most. Even at that most optimistic reading, you would have to try more than 1,300 random names on average to find one, and none of them would be a word. The same holds for every readable letters-only shape we tried: 0 of 1,500 pronounceable names and 0 of 1,500 dictionary words.
This also matches what we saw before. Our September re-run of the namespace study found 0 free in a separate sample of 2,500 random 5-letter names, and in July we found exactly one. Whatever was left at five letters is being claimed, not replenished.
Where the free 5-character names are
The free names sit almost entirely in mixed shapes, and some mixes are much better than others:
| Shape | Example shape | Free in our sample |
|---|---|---|
| Starts with a digit, letters and digits mixed | 7xk2q | 53% |
| Two digits among three letters | a7k2q | 51% |
| Three digits, two letters | a72k9 | 43% |
| One digit among four letters | ak2qx | 40% |
| Starts with a letter, letters and digits mixed | k7a2q | 38% |
| Underscore plus at least one digit | ab_7c | 37% |
| One letter, four digits | 7a291 | 9% |
| Underscore with letters only | ab_cd | 7% |
Three patterns stand out:
- A leading digit helps. Mixed names that start with a number were free 53% of the time, against 38% for those starting with a letter. Our reading: most people start a name with a letter, so that half of the namespace filled first.
- The underscore only helps if you also use a digit. Letters-only underscore names like ab_cd were free just 7% of the time, roughly 90,000 left out of 1.4 million. Add a digit and it jumps to about 37%.
- Readable combinations are the first to go. A digit added to a real word (0 of 1,000 free) is a very different thing from a digit in a random string (43% free). The free names are free precisely because they do not spell anything.
How many 5-character names are left?
Scaling each sample up to its full pattern gives a rough count of what is still claimable:
| Pattern | Possible names | Estimated free (95% range) |
|---|---|---|
| Letters and digits mixed | 48.5 million | about 21 million (20.1-21.8 million) |
| One underscore | 5.0 million | about 1.5 million (1.39-1.62 million) |
| Letters only | 11.9 million | at most about 9,000 |
| Digits only | 100,000 | at most a few hundred |
That is plenty of names in absolute terms, which is why "are there any 5-letter Roblox usernames left?" has a yes answer. It is also why that answer disappoints: the 22 million or so free ones are overwhelmingly strings nobody would choose for meaning, and the short, readable names were taken years ago. Our rarity checker scores how scarce a given name's shape is, using these measured rates.
On 1 October 2026 we sampled names in each pattern with a seeded random generator, then looked every one up on Roblox's official public username API, which reports whether a name belongs to an account. Every name the lookup did not return was re-checked on Roblox's sign-up validator, which separates a genuinely available name from one that is reserved or rejected by the content filter. A name counts as available only if the validator says it can be registered. NameSniper is not affiliated with Roblox.
How to get a 5-character Roblox name
If a mixed 5-character name is what you want, you do not need a list. You need a fast way to test candidates, and a willingness to accept a digit or an underscore.
Pick a shape from the table above
Leading-digit mixes and two-digit mixes have the best odds, around one in two. Letters-only underscore names are roughly one in fifteen.
Make it yours
Build candidates around something meaningful to you, such as initials, a number you like, or a fragment of your display name, rather than pure noise. You will burn through a few taken ones before one sticks.
Check each one against Roblox
Our Roblox username checker runs the same official lookup we used for this study, one name at a time, and tells you whether the name is free, taken or rejected by the filter.
Claim it immediately
On a new account, enter the name at sign-up. On an existing account, a username change costs Robux, so make sure the name is right before you pay. Your display name is separate and can be changed for free once a week.
If the name you actually want is a real 5-letter word, the honest answer is that generating variations will not get it. Those names only become available when Roblox releases them, which happens rarely and without notice. The way to catch one is to put an automated watch on that exact name with our Roblox username sniper, and our guide on how to name snipe on Roblox covers the full approach.
Watching for a taken 5-letter name?
NameSniper checks any Roblox name against the official API on a schedule and alerts you once a check confirms a taken name has become available. Real 5-letter words almost never open up, which is exactly why something should be watching when one does.
Frequently asked questions
The bottom line
The 5-character Roblox namespace is not empty, it is sorted. Everything readable, from dictionary words to pronounceable names to a word with a number on the end, is registered. What remains is millions of mixed strings, free precisely because they spell nothing. If you are happy with one of those, you can have one today with a few minutes of checking. If you want a real 5-letter word, the only way in is to watch for a release.
