Why usernames drop - and how we catch it
Usernames aren't locked forever. Handles free up three ways, and every platform plays by its own rules:
The owner renames. The old handle returns to the public pool: instantly on GitHub, on a documented recycling schedule on Twitch.
The account is deleted. The name is released once a grace window passes.
The platform purges. Inactive and banned accounts are swept in waves, freeing their names.
None of this is announced, and a brandable handle can be re-registered within minutes of freeing up. The only way to catch a drop is to be checking when it happens. That's what a watch does.

Three main ways: the owner renames (most platforms return the old name to the pool, sometimes after a hold period), the account gets deleted (the name is released after a grace window), or the platform sweeps inactive and banned accounts. Registering a username that has publicly dropped is allowed - it's a normal registration, just a fast one. NameSniper only reads public availability signals: we never log into platforms, automate signups, or touch accounts. The name you claim still has to follow each platform's naming, impersonation, and trademark rules.
